Odds and Ends
I grew up in Erie, Michigan, and attended Erie-Mason Consolidated Schools. Erie is a small town very similar to the Hanover-Horton area, and the school is comparable to ours as well. I graduated in 1987 and traveled a little down the road to The University of Toledo where I majored in Secondary Social Studies Education. My student teaching was done at Bedford High School, a name many of you might recognize through volleyball. I received my BE in 1991. I have also taken various classes through Eastern Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, and Spring Arbor University. I also was a graduate student at American Public University, where I studied to earn my Masters' of Education in School Counseling. (return to top of page)
I have been teaching in some capacity since 1991. For three years, I worked in Monroe County. I was a substitute teacher at Mason and directed their plays.
I also taught alternative education at Jefferson. Being involved in the alternative education program was a great experience! It was so fun to see kids who had trouble in a regular classroom succeed through our very intensive, very strict program! Our students really had the chance to shine and participate in activities that they had never done. Some highlights of our alternative education program included the publication of a yearbook and a literary magazine, and a trip to the Holocaust Museum in Bloomfield Hills. We also entered a contest for tickets to take our students to see The Sound of Music at the Fox Theatre in Detroit and won! What a treat it was for our students to go to Detroit and see a Broadway musical. Many of them had never been outside of Monroe and most of them had never gone to something so "fancy". This was one of the highlights of my teaching time at Jefferson, but the other one was when one of our students was invited by our Congressman to speak on the Senate floor. Heather spoke passionately for maintaining education funds for the adult/alternative education program.
I moved to Hillsdale County and substitute taught for four years. Although I taught everywhere in the county, my focus was at Reading High School and Camden-Frontier Schools. I loved the experience of subbing. I had a chance to interact with a variety of students and impact their lives in a positive manner. The memory of substitute teaching also makes me thankful for my permanent job. While subbing, I was co-director for plays at Reading High School, and I was the senior class advisor for the class of 98 at Camden-Frontier. (return to top of page)
Hanover-Horton Teaching Experience:
I am currently in my twenty-sixth year of teaching at Hanover-Horton Schools. I love my job, and I love working with the staff, community, and students. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. I was the theatre director for twenty years - drama is a passion of mine. As an advisor to the drama club, I have also chaperoned trips to New York City, Toronto, St. Louis, and Chicago. I am thankful to the community for the support they have given to our program. I have also been involved in the National Honor Society, both as an advisor and as a member of the faculty council. Because of this interest, I am also now the advisor for the National Junior Honor Society. My group of kids is amazing! They are such service-minded kids. Another area I felt privileged to serve in was as an advisor to the Bible Club. This student-led organization has touched my life in many ways. I was also involved in Academic Service Learning and have participated as an adult facilitator in Human Relations Camp. I worked with both Job Shadowing and CAS (Community as School). I was the MME coordinator and have helped maintain the senior scholarship information. I also work with the Virtual High School. (return to top of page)

My mission - in teaching and in life - is to make a difference in as many lives as possible. I want to be there when someone needs me and be able to listen and help in whatever way I can. What are my goals for what I want to see happen in my students? Simple. I want them to feel comfortable with who they are, yet see them push to reach new heights that they once thought were impossible. I want to see them embrace a giving attitude and a compassionate spirit. I want to see them enjoy learning and their time at Hanover-Horton, but I also want to see them strive to achieve those goals which will make their future shine! (return to top of page)
Believe it or not, teachers really ARE human. Here's your chance to get to know a little more about me.

Baseball | Baseball has to have a category all its own! I am a huge Detroit Tigers fanatic and have been since before they were any good. I have had season tickets at both Tiger Stadium and Comerica Park, and was at the last and first games of each stadium respectively. I was at the clinching games for the ALDS and the ALCS and had gone to the All-Star game the year before. I have traveled to 24 major league ball parks, including Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, Turner Field and Camden Yards. I have seen games in San Francisco (we flew in for the weekend), Toronto, Quebec, Philadelphia, and Miami to name a few. My favorite venue would have to be Camden Yards in Baltimore, but this past summer I went to San Diego and Petco Park comes in a close second. Being a Tiger fan when they were awful, and traveling to road stadiums, gave me the opportunity to get to know some of the players and coaches personally! That was a lot of fun! My favorite players are Juan Encarnacion, Omar Infante, and Jose Lima, who was just the nicest player I have ever met! My favorite coach? Juan Samuel - one of the true gentlemen of the game. Family | My family is extremely important to me. They have influenced me in more ways than I am sure they realize. I am extremely close to my parents and my sisters. They have always been there for me and will do anything for me. I was privileged to be the host mom to a wonderful daughter from Germany, Petra. I just attended her wedding in Germany to a wonderful man, Chezwin, from South Africa. I also hosted an amazing daughter from Poland, Misia, who I visited this past summer. My third exchange daughter is from Pakistan and her name is Momna. It was an experience that absolutely changed my life! I also enjoy spending time with my cats, Whiskers Oreo Patch and Sunshine Peach Charisma. (return to top of page) (return to Who is Miss Kuhrt) |

Church | I am a Christian, and I attend Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church. I previously attended North Reading Baptist Church. Through church, I have had the opportunity to practice my life mission - making a difference in the lives of others. I participated in a short-term mission trip to the Dominican Republic, served as an assistant in Sunday school, and led the drama ministry. At Spring Arbor, I served as a Stephen Minister, worked for the VBS program, and helped direct The Choice - an Easter Musical. (return to top of page) (return to Who is Miss Kuhrt) |
